What should a small business website contain?

Short answer: a site that says what you do and for whom, shows why someone should choose you, makes it easy to get in touch, and has the legal and technical parts in place. Most of what tends to fill a website can wait.

Below is what visitors need to find, what builds trust, the legal parts that apply to businesses in Sweden, the technical foundation, and a checklist for launch.

What visitors need to find

  • What you do, in the first heading. Not a slogan, but a sentence that says what you offer and for whom.
  • Where you are, or which area you cover. Especially important if your customers come from a particular town.
  • A page per service. Someone searching for one thing should land on a page about exactly that.
  • Prices, or how the price is set. A from price or an example goes a long way. It filters out the wrong enquiries and attracts the right ones.
  • How it works. Two or three steps from first contact to delivery.
  • A clear way to get in touch. A form, an email address and ideally a phone number, on every page.

What builds trust

  • Who is behind the business, by name.
  • Real examples of earlier work, if you have some to show. Better none than invented ones.
  • Reviews from real customers, for example from your Google Business Profile.
  • Company details such as the organisation number and, if you are VAT registered, the VAT number.

Some parts are required by law for businesses in Sweden, however small the site:

  • Company details. The Swedish Electronic Commerce Act requires anyone offering services online to state their name, address, email address and organisation number, and their VAT registration number if they have one.
  • A privacy policy. If the site collects personal data, for example through a contact form, the GDPR requires it to say what is stored, why and for how long.
  • Cookies. Cookies the site does not need in order to work, such as for statistics or advertising, require the visitor's consent.

The technical foundation

  • Works on a phone and loads quickly.
  • Can only be reached encrypted, over https.
  • A title and a description of its own on every page.
  • A sitemap and a connection to Google Search Console.
  • Analytics that respect the visitor's choice about cookies.

What each point means, and how to check it yourself, is in Technical SEO: what a small business actually needs.

What can wait

  • A blog, if there is no time to write in it. An empty blog does more harm than none.
  • Several languages, before there are customers who need them.
  • Booking, sign-in and payments, if an existing service can be connected instead. Where that line runs is in When is a website enough, and when do you need a web app?.
  • Animations and effects that slow the page down without saying anything more.

A checklist for launch

  1. Every page answers what, for whom and how to get in touch.
  2. The contact form arrives, and someone reads it.
  3. Company details, a privacy policy and information about cookies are in place.
  4. The site works on a phone and on a slow connection.
  5. No page is still marked noindex from the test version.
  6. Search Console is connected and the sitemap submitted.
  7. The domain, hosting and email are in your name.

What it costs with me
