How long does SEO take before it shows?

What happens first when a site starts working on SEO, why it usually takes months, what speeds it up, and how to follow the progress in Search Console.

Short answer: technical fixes often show within a few weeks, but ranking for what customers actually search for takes most sites months. Google itself says that in most cases it takes four months to a year before improvements have been made and start to pay off.

Below is what happens in which order, what makes it faster or slower, and how to see that the work is heading the right way before the enquiries arrive.

What happens, in order

  1. The pages are found and indexed. Google has to find a page, read it and add it to its index. That can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and a sitemap in Search Console makes it easier.
  2. Impressions arrive. The page starts to appear in the results, often far down. It shows as impressions in Search Console before anyone clicks.
  3. Positions improve. Once Google has seen that the page answers the question, it moves up. This is where the months go.
  4. Clicks and enquiries. Only when the page ranks high enough do people start to click, and some of them get in touch.

What makes it faster

  • Little competition for what you want to be found for, such as a service in a particular town.
  • A clear page per service, instead of everything on a single page.
  • Links between your own pages, so that every page can be found.
  • A site that has been around for a while and has some history with Google.
  • A Google Business Profile, if you have customers in a particular area. It can show on the map before the site ranks. How it works is in Google Business Profile: how your business shows up locally.

What makes it slower

  • A brand new domain with no history.
  • Fierce competition for broad terms across the whole country.
  • Thin pages that say little more than the name of the service.
  • Technical errors, such as a noindex tag left over from the test version.
  • Pausing the work after a few months, before it has had time to pay off.

How to follow the progress

Search Console is free and comes from Google. Two reports are enough to see whether the work is heading the right way:

  • Pages shows which pages are indexed and why others are not. This is where you see early if something technical is wrong.
  • Performance shows impressions, clicks and average position for every search and every page. Impressions often rise long before clicks do.

Compare month by month, not day by day. The numbers move a lot between single days, and one bad week rarely means anything.

What to expect in the first months

In the first weeks most of the change is in the technical side and the indexing. After a couple of months, impressions have usually grown for pages that are new or rewritten, and that is where you see whether the content hits the mark. Enquiries are the last thing to show, and the slowest.
